Comrades - Film. 4Ask someone to think of the British trade union movment and they'll probably come back at you with beer and sandwiches, wild cat strikes and hard living in the north of England. They almost certainly won't bring up the idyll that is rural Dorset. It's here, however, that trade unionism as we know it today was born, when six men decided to band together and turned the working world on its head. Comrades tells the story of these men, the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Given the significance of what they stood for, it's surprising that the Martyrs' story hasn't been told more often. Indeed, outside of an annual TUC Tolpuddle festival, the labourers and their actions have remained the province of historians. If recent research is to be believed, the decision of James Brine, James Hammett, George and James Loveless, and Thomas and John Standfield to found the Friendly Society Of Agricultural Labourers wasn't the world- shaking event it's often painted as. Still, the Tolpuddle Martyrs occupy an interesting corner of British history, so it's nice to know that when someone did decide to tell their tale cinematically, the man in question was Bill Douglas. It's odd if rather touching to know that a man can secure a place in artistic history with such a small body of work. While others might have done much more, Douglas' awesome autobiographical trilogy (My Childhood from 1. My Ain Folk from 1. My Way Home from 1. Comrades has earned him a love and affection denied his more prolific contemporaries. A Scot resident in Devon, Douglas' love of the area and its history and his interest in the working men of today and yesteryear made him the perfect man to make Comrades. At first glance, the film with its long running time and starry cast might seem like any other epic, but this is a picture very much in the Douglas mould. Where other directors might have used the Tolpuddle story as the backdrop for a Thomas Hardy- esque tale of thwarted passion, Douglas saw a less romantic but more compelling story about hard graft and social injustice. Unable to cast his actor- of- choice Stephen Archibald on the grounds that he was in prison, Douglas gathered around him an impressive band of performers to play the Martyrs - their numbers including Phil Davis and a hirsute Keith Allen. Film legend Trevor Howard turned down the pivotal part of Mr Pitt, but Douglas found a more than adequate subsitute in the shape of Michael Hordern. Factor in James Fox, Vanessa Redgrave and a girlish Imelda Staunton and you have the sort of cast you'd more readily associate with Merchant- Ivory. Douglas will have no bar of Ismail and James's chocolate box Britain, mind. We may have headed 1. Not that he is only interested in pain and degredation - for all the grit and grimaces, it's the human spirit's indefatigability that enjoys centre stage in Douglas's world. Although a big hit at the Berlin Film Festival, Comrades struggled to find an audience. A three- hour film about the right to unionse was always going to be a tough sell, particularly at a time when the miners' strike was still so fresh in the memory. Comrades thus became something of a curiosity - a feature film dwarfed by its creator's earlier, shorter achievements. As such it has something in common with the town of Tolpuddle's idiosyncratic tribute to their most famous sons. A thatched building somewhere between a bandstand and a bus stop - it couldn't seem further removed from the industrial world the Martyrs helped usher in. Then again, it's beautifully made, charmingly crafted and well worth discovering: again, not unlike Douglas' picture.
